The Middlesex University accredited combined Antenatal, Birth and Postnatal Doula training is the foundation upon which would be Doulas build their careers. At our exclusive 2 day course, you will meet aspiring Doulas and Midwives... You will meet others transitioning from other careers. Emphasis is placed on practical, hands-on instruction programme that the Doula typically provides.
Scheme of work for Antenatal, Birth and Postnatal Doula Course
You will be required to study the following modules via our Doula e learning portal, before or after you have attended the course:
- Introduction to the Role of The Doula.
- Continuing Professional Development, Supervision and Reflective Practice For Doulas.
- Effective communication and engagement with children, young people and families.
- Child and young person development.
- Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child.
All you need is an email address. We will provide you with a personal tutor, password and all the resources that you need.

The Essence of Antenatal Doula Care
Learning Outcomes
AIM: By the end of the session, the participants will be able to relate the role of a doula during the antenatal period. They will have an understanding of the concept of care of pregnant women and how it is provided within the framework of the health service. This information will enable them to be able to refer their clients appropriately for issues falling beyond the doula’s scope of practice.
Objectives: The participants must be able to:
- Have a basic understanding anatomy and physiology in relation to reproduction and childbirth.
- Understand the structure of health services that are involved in the care of the pregnant women during the antenatal period, labour and birth and the post-natal period.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the issues of informed decision making and how women can be empowered to utilise these in issues relating to their pregnancy by seeking the appropriate information from their health care providers.
- Clearly distinguish between the skills of facilitating and supporting decision making while remaining impartial and not influencing decisions.
Essence of Birth Doula Care
AIM: By the end of the session, the participants will be able to relate to the role of a Birth Doula during labour and childbirth. They will have an understanding of the concept of care of pregnant women and how it is provided within the framework of the health service. This information will enable them to be able to refer their clients appropriately for issues falling beyond the Birth Doula's scope of practice.
Objectives: The participants must be able to:
- Understand the differences between the role of the Doula and the Midwife.
- Understand the structure of health services that are involved in labour and childbirth.
- Understand the Birth Doula's role during labour, i.e. supportive but non-intrusive, and the first hour after birth, particularly in helping with the initiation of breastfeeding following the lead of the midwife.
Have an awareness of natural births, water births, C Section, obstetric emergencies
Essence of Postnatal Doula Care
AIM: By the end of the session, the participants will be able to relate to the role of a doula during the post-natal period labour. They will have an understanding of the issues for women in the post natal period, including the adjustment involved and the potential issues that can arise during this period. This information will enable them to offer effective post-natal support and be aware of concerns and issues that may require appropriate further referral to the health care providers.
Objectives: The participants must be able to:
- Understand the structure of health services that are involved in the care of the woman and baby in the post natal period.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of a woman and her new baby during the post-natal period.
- Clearly distinguish between the skills of facilitating and supporting women and their partners to look after their babies as opposed to doing it for them.
- Understand the doula’s role in providing breastfeeding support that will help women sustain this in the longer term as advocated by the World Health Organisation and the Department Of Health, but also to support women in the choices that they make in terms of feeding their babies if they do not choose to breastfeed.
- Understand the basic principles of infant care.
- Understand Postnatal Depression
The classroom course includes: A visit to The Whittington Birthing Centre and setting up your own doula enterprise
After the course, you will be required to complete questions and complete 2 case studies. You will be required to attend 2 births. We provide with supervision and support to become a qualified Middlesex University accredited Antenatal, Birth and Postnatal Doula.
